Since Matt and I started dating 13 years ago, we always said we wanted three boys. Well, as much as we hoped and wished, the decision ultimately wasn’t ours and a few months ago we welcomed our little girl into our family. I’ll admit it: we were scared. Matt feared being wrapped around her little finger, while I wondered if I could ever get used to the color pink and Barbie dolls. Kenna must have sensed our hesitance and realized she had a challenge to win us over. If so, it was a challenge she quickly overcame. Our son spent most of his first year fussing, frowning and fighting sleep. Anticipating much the same, we were surprised to find ourselves with a happy, smiley, good-tempered baby who sleeps and sleeps and sleeps. Kenna spends a good deal of her awake time smiling and cooing at anyone she sees (which already has Matt concerned for her teen years). This little girl has quickly won us over and when her brother is being especially whiney and difficult, we know who will be receiving our inheritance.
So in just a few short months, Kenna has shown us that having a girl might not be so bad after all. As for our fears, yes, Matt is wrapped around her finger (who can resist that gummy little smile?) and I am becoming more accustomed to pink. As for the Barbies, the jury is still out on that one.
